SUUSA 2008 General Election results to be announced Thursday

Legislature grants select requests for SUU

The 2008 General Session of the Utah State Legislature ended with wins and losses for SUU. Among SUU's gains was approval to pursue funding and begin designs for a new science building, although no state funding was granted for the project. Losses included the $2 million sought to improve student retention and graduation rates.

$5 million allocated to new Shakespearean theatre

The Utah Shakespearean Festival received $5 million in revenue bonds at the 2008 Utah Legislative session, which ended Wednesday. SUU President Michael T. Benson said Utah Capital Facilities authorized the bond. Benson said the next step is to approach the SUU Board of Trustees for final approval of the bond.

Grant aids Service-Learning courses

SUU's Faculty Service-Learning Committee has begun to implement new programs created to benefit students and educators at SUU. The Service-Learning Enhancement Grant Program has recently been developed for instructors to enhance their service-learning endeavors, said Earl Mulderink, committee chair and professor of history.

Utah Summer Games sporting new, improved competitions for 2008

The Utah Summer Games will continue this year with the addition of ultimate Frisbee and youth volleyball tournaments, as well as a new director. Casey McClellan is the new director for the games and "is doing an excellent job," SUU President Michael T. Benson said.

Cedar City council presented with plan for Vietnam Memorial Park

The city council met Wednesday to discuss a variety of concerns, including a design for the Vietnam Memorial Park and options for a street lighting project on Coal Creek. The Vietnam Memorial Park Committee presented a plan for the Vietnam Memorial Park to the council.

Library in the Park to focus on eye site Beginning today, the Cedar City Library in the Park will play host to a traveling eye exhibit, The Eye Site. Sponsored by the National Eye Institute, the Eye Site travels around the United States to raise awareness of eye conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts and diabetic eye disease as well as providing free screenings.
