Accounting students prepare free returns

The SUU Accounting Department is offering their service to community members and students for free help with taxes. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program is a service program run by 70 volunteers who assist lower income families with an income of $40,000 or less Robin Boneck, VITA adviser and assistant professor of accounting, said.

Mardi Gras comes to SUU

(Posted March 8) Students crowded into the Sharwan Smith Center on Friday for SUUSA's annual Mardi Gras celebration. Tyson Pulispher, SUUSA activities vice-president, said Mardi Gras went well and he was pleased with the turnout. Pulispher said he was also impressed with the talent show.

2008 SUUSA Primary Election results announced

(Updated March 5) SUUSA 2008 Primary Election results were announced Wednesday in the Sharwan Smith Center. The general election vote will take place Mar. 12 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Living Room and at www.suu.edu. SUUSA presidential candidates Jon McNaughtan and Devin Brooks will move to the SUUSA 2008 General Election with 594 and 248 votes, respectively, while Ashley Greenberg, who will not be moving on, received 188 votes.

Impeachment actions brought against School of Business senator

The SUUSA Chief Justice formed an impeachment committee Tuesday night after being presented a petition for a senator's impeachment during the regular SUUSA Senate meeting.

Empowered: Women's Week sessions educate both sexes

Utah Shakespearean Festival receives $5 million in bonds during legislative session

The Utah Shakespearean Festival received $5 million in revenue bonds at the 2008 Utah Legislative session, which ended Wednesday. SUU President Michael T. Benson said Utah Capital Facilities authorized the bond.

Grievance hearing rulings clarify party, candidacy issues

The SUUSA Judicial Council handed down rulings on Thursday and Friday concerning grievances filed against two potential student-government candidates. Grievances were filed against Jeff Kinsel regarding his one-person party, and against Proud Party member McKenna Jeffery because she missed the candidacy-application deadline by two days.

Mardi Gras party to re-create aura of Bourbon Street

A variety of activities, including a game show, a dance, a casino and a re-creation of Bourbon Street in New Orleans, will be featured at Friday's Mardi Gras. Jessica Brooks, SUU's Mardi Gras coordinator, said she thinks SUU students will enjoy Mardi Gras this year.

SUUSA Senate tables "Fiscal Responsibility" resolution, committee formed for further investigation

SUUSA Senators tabled a bill and passed three additional bills, which provided funding for focus weeks, at Tuesday's meeting. Bill 46-08, "Fiscal Responsibility" was tabled for another week, and the Fiscal Responsibility Acts Committee was formed to make any necessary changes to the bill.

Cedar City council presented with plan for Vietnam Memorial Park

The city council met Wednesday to discuss a variety of concerns, including a design for the Vietnam Memorial Park and options for a street lighting project on Coal Creek. The Vietnam Memorial Park Committee presented a plan for the Vietnam Memorial Park to the council.

Annual snow pack fits season requirement

Despite large amounts of snowfall in Cedar City and surrounding areas, engineers say the flow of melting snow should not cause any problems and will be about normal compared to past years. Cedar City Engineer Kit Wareham said the snow pack level is at about normal to slightly higher levels, which is typical for this time of year.

Water projects to satisfy campus, Cedar City thirst

As water projects continuously arise in Cedar City, engineers will continue work on a new water system for SUU and reconstructing an old reservoir. Cedar City engineer Kit Wareham said SUU is currently under a culinary water system for all water purposes.

Grant money used to bridge the arts in Iron County schools through scholarship to SUU students

After a $40,000 grant was awarded to SUU and the Utah Shakespearean Festival by The Dana Foundation, SUU students now have the opportunity to apply for the ArtsBridge program. Michael Bahr, USF education director, said ArtsBridge is a program that will provide $1,000 scholarships to SUU students interested in teaching the arts as an aid to other areas of curriculum to students throughout Iron County.

Assembly grants 2K to annual egg hunt

The Clubs & Student Involvement Assembly unanimously passed bills 021-08 "Native American Week" and 022-08 "Bunny Trail" at Tuesday's meeting. "Bunny Trail" will allocate $1,992.69 to Sigma Nu for their 21st-annual Easter egg hunt. Several Sigma Nu members attended the meeting to support their bill.

POLICE BEAT

Cedar City Police Department Thursday - Police responded to a report at 2200 N. Main St. and arrested Klint M. Blackner, 19, on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Thursday - Police responded to a report at 628 E. Wagon Trail Drive and arrested Weston Aaron Johnson, 25, on suspicion of theft and forgery.
