The summertime and off-season didn't mean a break for the SUU men's golf team as their names repeatedly appeared atop the leader boards in amateur tournaments across the state.
The summer season can be just as intense as mid-season for some players and the entire SUU golf roster continually impressed in numerous outings.
The players don't compete as a team in these tournaments and individuals can enter in any tournament they choose.
Seniors Matt McArthur and Nate Page showed why they are among the best amateurs in the state through strong finishes against Utah's top golfers.
McArthur made the biggest splash this summer when he was one of three Utahns to qualify for the U.S. Amateur, being played at the historic Pinehurst Country Club.
The U.S. Amateur is the most prestigious tournament for non-professional golfers and is a tournament that Tiger Woods won three consecutive times.
McArthur failed to make the cut as he tied for 161 out of the 315-player field with a two-day total of nine-over-par 149. A two-round total of 145 would have propelled McArthur in to match play but McArthur said he was just happy for the opportunity to compete against the nation's best.
"Playing at that level of competition was a great honor for myself as well as the school," he said. "It gave me a good perspective of where I stand in the big scheme of things."
Page qualified for match play at the Utah State Amateur when he fired rounds of 70 and 69. The two-day total of five-under-par landed Page the eighth overall seed out of the 32-player field in match play.
Page defeated Steve Borget in his first match, one up, but eventually fell in the second round to Christian Jensen. Page said he was pleased with his summer play.
"All the hard work and practice I put in to my golf game started to pay off this summer," Page said.
Incoming freshmen Denny Job from Fremont High School and local Cedar High product Jeff Evans were two highly touted high school prospects that will step foot on campus today.
